Sheffield Employment Support: Where Residents and Employers Can Begin
Where to start with work, training, referrals and recruitment, and how Sheffield’s employment service differs from wider business support.
Published

Sheffield employment support has routes for people seeking work and employers recruiting staff. Opportunity Sheffield, Sheffield City Council’s employment and skills service, handles both through Pathways to Work. Business Sheffield is the council’s contact for wider business challenges. Start with the problem you need help with, then choose the relevant route.[1][2]
Choose Your Starting Point
| Your Situation | Official Starting Point |
|---|---|
| You’re looking for work or training | Use the self-referral chat on the Pathways to Work website. |
| You’re helping someone find employment or skills support | Use the website’s referral route, which accepts referrals for someone else. |
| You’re recruiting or need workforce training support | Start with the Pathways to Work support for employers section. |
| You need help with cashflow, marketing or other business challenges | Contact Business Sheffield through the council’s business support page. |
For Residents: Work, Training and Referrals
Pathways to Work is a South Yorkshire programme that supports people to find and stay in employment. Opportunity Sheffield carries it out across Sheffield, running community-based employment support projects for jobseekers. The regional programme name and the local service name describe different parts of the same route.[1]
If you’re seeking help yourself, the website explicitly offers self-referral through its chat. You can begin by explaining whether you want to find a job, explore training or discuss support with staying in work. For a useful first enquiry, describe what you want to change and ask which current support is appropriate. You don’t need to choose a project name before opening that conversation.[1]
Referring someone else has its own signposted route. Explain whether the person is looking for employment or skills support, rather than assuming they need the same help you used previously. Ask about the relevant project’s entry conditions and next steps before making plans to attend. The programme’s broad purpose doesn’t establish an individual’s eligibility for every project.[1]
For Employers: Recruitment and Training
Opportunity Sheffield also works with Sheffield employers on recruitment and training. Its employer offer sits within Pathways to Work, alongside the resident support routes. If your immediate concern is filling vacancies or developing your workforce, use the employer section to frame your enquiry.[1]
Make that enquiry concrete. We recommend setting out the roles you need to fill, the working hours, essential skills and the training you’re considering. Separate requirements someone must meet on arrival from skills you’re willing to teach. These are useful discussion points, rather than a published application checklist. Ask what recruitment or training support is available for those particular roles before committing to an approach.[1]
When Business Sheffield Is the Better Contact
A staffing enquiry can sit alongside a wider business problem. For cashflow, marketing or funding and finance questions, the council directs businesses to Business Sheffield. Its business support page states that one-to-one advice is free. That description applies to the business advice offer and should be kept separate from questions about individual employment projects.[2]
The council distinguishes between Business Information Officers supporting high street businesses throughout Sheffield and Business Advisors working with businesses away from the high streets, including start-ups, technology companies and manufacturers. If your enquiry covers recruitment and business costs, explain both when you contact the relevant teams. Ask each what they can address and what your next step should be.[1][2]
